Despite playing some enterprising football and occupying fourth position for much of the year, once again Perth Glory they just unable to secure that elusive finals place in Season Three. This season a new coach has the task of taking the Perth team to the top.

Jamie Harnwell is a name synonymous with the Glory on the men’s side of the equation and he will be looking to use all of his experience to mould a young squad into a finals squad. He

is going to have to do this without three of the Glory’s most experienced, and arguably their best attacking, players. Katie Gill and Sam Kerr both succumbed to knee injuries while Collette McCallum will be sitting out the season.

“We’ve got some fantastic younger players. Players such as Ella Mastrantonio, Shannon May, Jaymee Gibbons and Marianna Tabain.”

“There’s lot of youth there and a lot of potential and if we can get off to a good start and you never know what can happen.”

Perth have a new look attack with local products Katarina Jukic, Lara Filocamo and Sarah Carroll all getting their chance at the national level. However, the biggest key to Perth’s chances this season will be the defence. Captain Tanya Oxtoby will play a key role in ushering through youngsters Shawn Billiam, Emily Dunn, Sadie Lawrence and Erika Elze.

As to what we can expect to see from Perth?

“I would like to see the game being played in the right way,” stated Harnwell. “We’ll be playing an attacking style and getting the ball down.”

“We’ve got some fantastic passes and dribblers of the ball so if you give them a platform from the back to go out and shine and hopefully score a few goals.”

The Strength

Jamie Harnwell has turned his attention to the locally in terms of recruitment; Tabain, Carroll, Jukic, Filocamo and Gibbons to name a couple.

As the NTC coach, Harnwell has had the luxury of working with his players for the last 8 or so months. The players are familiar to him and comfortable with him and have a clear understanding of what is expected.

All that will be essential in the upcoming season. The Glory have some proven W-League performers in May, Tabain, Hawkins and Mastrantonio and if they can step it up, Perth could unsettle some sides.

The Challenge

This season will be a real test for Perth Glory as it looks to cover several key losses. In particular the loss of their spine who served them so will

last season. Tine Cederkvist (GK), Alex Neilsson (central defender), Collette McCallum (central midfielder) and Katie Gill (striker) will all be unavailable and have been replaced by young and inexperienced players.

How quickly Harnwell gets them to meld will be crucial to how they perform this season.
