Women's Premier League: Round 14 Review

ANU WFC produced another stunning performance as they held Belconnen United to a 0-0 draw at McKellar Park in The Tradies Women’ Premier League. After beating Belwest Foxes 1-0 last week the result confirms ANU WFC have turned a corner. Meanwhile the Foxes, Woden Valley and Tuggeranong United recorded expected wins in their Round 14 matches.

ANU WFC earned their second impressive result in the space of a week when they claimed a well-earned point from a 0-0 draw with Belconnen United at McKellar Park in Round 14 of The Tradies Women’s Premier League. Defending resolutely, and in numbers, the away team frustrated the life out of their more experienced opponents who wasted numerous chances to break the deadlock being denied by poor finishing and some excellent ANU defending. Stopper Lara Cleaver was exceptionally good in her marking of Matildas international Caitlin Munoz allowing the Canberra United forward little room to manoeuvre and limiting her impact on the action. At the other end of the field Belconnen goalkeeper Jocelyn Mara needed to be on her toes to deny Sarah Everett on a rare ANU WFC foray into the home team’s territory with Mara rushing out to block Everett as she advanced clear on goal with a chance to win the match. According to an ANU WFC source the students had their ‘mad skills on show’ throughout the encounter with the point a deserved return from their showing and leaving them with a morale boosting fortnight from which they should be able to take a giant leap forward full of confidence.

Canberra FC 1 (Ashlea Bryant) Woden Valley 5 (Hayley Hinde (2), Ashleigh Palombi (2), Jenna Walsh)

As expected Woden Valley ultimately proved to be too good for Canberra FC in their Round 14 match in The Tradies Women’s Premier League at Deakin Stadium but the manner of victory was hardly in keeping with the 5-1 result. After taking a 2-0 lead the match seemed fairly secure for Ed Hollis’ team but amazingly Canberra FC fought back to not only reduced the deficit via a goal from Ashlea Bryant but give themselves a real chance to level the scores when they were awarded a second-half penalty for an infringement in the box. Canberra United Westfield W-League player Rebecca Kiting struck the spot-kick well but was denied by a wonderful save from Gill Raymond in the Woden Valley goal. The save knocked the stuffing out of the home team who finally succumbed to Woden’s slick passing style and falling to a 1-5 defeat that was hardly reflective of an even match. Hayley Hinde bagged her first goals of the season and was joined on the score sheet with a double from Ashleigh Palombi, taking her season total to an impressive sixteen and Jenna Walsh, whose goal was her first of the year in the top flight. Woden remains nine points behind the league leaders, Belwest Foxes, with a game in hand to come against a resurgent ANU WFC.

Tuggeranong United 7 (Kate Allen 1’, 16’, 35’, Ash Neall 48’, Annica Schoo 56’, Jen Malbon 78’, Sigourney Dunk 88’) Brindabella Blues 1 (Erin Hinton 26’)

Even the absence of leading scorer Julie Ibarra couldn’t stop Tuggeranong United from running up a big win over hapless Brindabella Blues at Kambah 2. With thirteen-goal Ibarra unavailable Tuggeranong had to look elsewhere for goals and didn’t have to wait long for someone to step up to the mark. Kate Allen broke the deadlock inside the first minute on her way to a first-half hat-trick that steadied any Tuggeranong nerves and meant that Brindabella was always on the back foot. However the final margin perhaps wasn’t as reflective of the first 45 minutes as it could have been with Erin Hinton scoring in the 26th minute to give the away team some hope by bringing the Blues back to 2-1 at that stage. Once Ash Neall had made the score 4-1 three minutes after the re-start there was little doubt that United would claim the points and they added three more before the final whistle. Annica Schoo scored goal number five in the fifty-sixth minute before Jen Malbon made it 6-1 with her first goal of the campaign. There was even time for a rare goal to vice-captain Sigourney Dunk striking a shot into the top corner of the net from inside the penalty area to complete the win and push Tuggeranong back into contention for a place in the top-four only four points off the pace.

Weston Creek 0 Belwest Foxes 4 (Katrina Staniforth, Emma Beaumont, Cian Maciejewski, Gemma Matheson)

There was a feeling of a return to normality at ANU Willows on Sunday afternoon as the Belwest Foxes hit back from their shock 0-1 loss to ANU WFC at the same venue with a comfortable 4-0 win over Weston Creek in a re-match of the 2009 ACT Grand Final. The Foxes struck two goals either side of the half-time whistle to secure a routine three points in a match in which goalkeeper Melanie Luksa was relatively untroubled. The Foxes saw four different scorers in the match with Katrina Staniforth, Emma Beaumont and Gemma Matheson, reacting fastest to a good stop by Michelle Tifan in the Weston goal to prod the ball home from close range, all scoring for the first time in 2010. Canberra United player Cian Maciejewski meanwhile struck her fourteenth goal of the season as Pat Mills’ team turned their dominance into goals with a convincing win that should silence any perceived doubt that the Foxes may be on the slide. Weston meanwhile will be anxiously looking over their shoulder at the chasing pack with the defeat allowing Belconnen United, Canberra FC and Tuggeranong United to close the gap between them and third place on the league table. A tough looking assignment against the Blue Devils is next up for Robbie Mason’s team with the trip to McKellar Park possibly a season defining moment for the reigning title holders.
